Africa is home to some of the most magnificent and most dangerous carnivores in the world. With increasing incidences of human-carnivore conflict worldwide, nowhere is this conflict more prominent and likely to increase than within the large human and wildlife populations of East Africa.
Building upon 5 years of experience working with local communities and lions in Northern Tanzania, the People & Predators Fund’s current focus is to improve relationships with people and carnivores by targeting problem areas, assessing and monitoring conflicts, and by developing socially appropriate and participatory solutions to minimize wildlife attacks on livestock and humans alike.
Some of the Fund's past, current and future programs include:
Viillage surveys were conducted in order to determine people’s attitudes towards carnivores, as well as the problems that human communities have had with carnivores.
A livestock predation program, where the Fund helps train local community members to collect data and record attacks on livestock using a community reporting network.
An initial mission into Southern Tanzania to learn more about human encounters with man-eating lions. These occurences, which are unique to that region, have not yet been recognized by conservation organizations and the Fund plans to focus more attention on them in the future.
