Today, more and more information shows that the ranges of Africa’s large carnivores often extend far beyond the boundaries of the national parks and reserves in which these animals reside. Without viable populations of the prey animals that sustain them outside protected areas, the populations of these carnivores dwindle – often a first sign of environmental collapse.
The People & Predators Fund has recognized that the successful conservation of these magnificent species depends upon satisfying their ecological needs as well as rallying the support of the communities that interact with them. Utilizing the unique tracking skills of Hadzabe bushmen – one of Africa’s oldest tribes – the Fund has pioneered a new methodology for assessing the numbers of wild cats and dogs in a 12,000 km2 area outside Tarangire National Park. The Fund is now ready to apply this new methodology to other areas of Tanzania as it has proved effective, low cost and efficient in monitoring multiple species simultaneously.
Furthermore, as a result of its non-partisan approach to wildlife conservation, the Fund has developed important relationships with major stakeholders in the fate of these large carnivores, including local people, sport hunters, photographic tourism operators, the Tanzanian National Parks Authority and the Tanzanian Wildlife Division.
