Environmental degradation is increasing at an alarming rate throughout northern Tanzania, and especially within Simanjiro District. Grass plains and wild bush are being transformed into agricultural plots as acacia woodlands are cleared for charcoal production. Containing the core calving grounds for significant populations of wildebeest, hartebeest and zebra, as well as important lion habitats, the land within Simanjiro District is essential to the survival of not only the wildlife of Tarangire National Park but the entire ecosystem.
Through its conservation education program, the People & Predators Fund aims to increase local access for environmental education materials while emphasizing the cultural significance of wildlife to the Maasai lifestyle. In the primary phase of this program, the Fund is seeking support for the development and testing of educational materials focused on lions, recognizing the special relationship that the Maasai have with these animals.
Currently, the Fund is developing a 30-page educational booklet, "Mazingira Yako Na Simba" or "Your Environment with Lions," aimed at primary school children living in areas experiencing intense human-lion conflict. Helena Grant, a qualified primary school teacher, is providing volunteer assistance in the booklet’s development. The Fund intends to initially distribute copies of the booklet to Loibor Serrit Primary School for use by their Form 3 to Form 5 students (ages 9-16).
